When I first ordered this I wasn't too sure that it was absolutely necessary but my opinion of that swiftly changed when I realised that it places the monitors at a perfect height for viewing on a standard computer desk. Firstly, the size of the stand gives you enough space to use two larger monitors while also leaving you the space underneath the monitors for paperwork and other bits that would usually be cluttering a desk. You then have the height increase the stand provides which saves some neck pain. The shelf itself is really well made and looks the part too. It can hold a lot of weight thanks to the middle support bar. Aside from the above you also get a small shelf underneath one side to put small items. There's only a small gap so keep this in mind when considering whether this is for you. Personally, I find it's a great place to put my work laptop when I'm not using it, along with my smaller mouse and phone when I want it out of the way to help focus on a task.
